Lyrics

Memphis Hawk is a Detroit-based singer and songwriter who, within his songs, wrestles with the angels of love, faith, death, and identity while being more than happy to include his audience in the conversation. He draws lyrical inspiration from the words of Leonard Cohen, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, and Harold Bloom, and his musical influences range from the atmospheric soundscapes of Daniel Lanois to the dusty ache of Ryan Adams’ reverb-laden guitar. At home on stage as both a solo artist as well as with his occasional band, The Blind Messengers, Memphis Hawk draws inspiration from every aspect of human existence.

Eden and Everything After
Restless

A beating heart and a restless soul
Are all that I've known since time began
There is a sound rising from a tempest sea
I'm challenging belief to find out who I am

I will find you there, I know
I will meet you at the end of this road
Until I drift away to another place
I will seek the word you hold

I have no map, only a compass here
But there isn't a fear of what I do not know
There is a voice; I've heard it all my life
It's calling me to find the place
that I'll call home

I will find you there, I know
I will meet you at the end of this road
Until I drift away to another place
I will seek the word you hold

I will find you there, I know
I will meet you at the end of this road
Until I drift away to another place
I will seek the word you hold

Open Your Arms

You can't stop the rain
But that don't stop you from trying
You can't heal the lame
But that don't stop you from crying

Oh, if you could only see
the light that shines on your soul
If you could only leave behind
the pain that you hold
Then you could find the freedom
that lies in letting go...just open your arms
my friend

There's no one to blame
There's nothing here that's broken
There's no need for shame
It only fear that's holding you

Oh, if you could only see
the light that shines on your soul
If you could only leave behind
the pain that you hold
Then you could find the freedom
that lies in letting go...just open your arms
my friend

The need to always know
is holding you down, it's holding you down
Until you learn to embrace the profound

Oh, if you could only see
the light that shines on your soul
If you could only leave behind
the pain that you hold
Then you could find the freedom
that lies in letting go...just open your arms
my friend

Will I Remember You?
I will always wonder why
a flesh destined to die
was given so much to love
If I am the first to say goodbye
and see the face of the divine;
will I forget where I come from?

Will I remember you?

If I wake up in paradise
and do not know of my past life
what was the point of a soul?
If my voice no longer cries
then my mind ceases with time
for my heart can't be so cold

Will I remember you?
I would like to think
this world was something more than
an exercise in truth
Will I remember you?

When the day is done,
when the night has come
and I close my eyes
what will I find?

Will I remember you?
I would like to think
this world was something more than
an exercise in truth
Will I remember you?

Until Sunrise
It's a lighter burden to be blind
than bear the weight of time
My soul cannot fathom it's own end
But eternity severs my mind

Tonight...I'll chase the moon until sunrise
Tonight...let me seek so I may find
Tonight

From Eden to this place we all have crawled
What is gained if nothing's lost?
I long not for my own completion
But for the chance to fall

Tonight...I'll chase the moon until sunrise
Tonight...let me seek so I may find
Tonight...if I can't choose than why confine
me to night, tonight?

Please let me be, please set me free
I'm on my knees
This has to be more than some cold belief
It means more to me
It means more to thee

Tonight...I'll chase the moon until sunrise
Tonight...let me seek so I may find
Tonight...if I can't choose than why confine
me to night, tonight?

Oil and Wine
We're chained by fate.
bound by dove and dust
while waiting for the Kingdom Come
But there's a cost
to every loaded gun
Freedom's both the source
and the enemy of love

We can rise together or we can fall apart

I want to let you off tonight
But you want to suffer for your crimes
I want to see past this divide
You and I, we're like oil and wine

You say black and blue
are the true colors of love
You've got to beat it up to make sure
that you've got enough
But souls aren't lost
and wars are never won
A Kingdom built on wrath
will surely come undone

We can rise together or we can fall apart

I want to let you off tonight
But you want to suffer for your crimes
I want to see past this divide
You and I, we're like oil and wine

You said that I was a sacrifice
that refused to die
You said that we would have to pay the price...
tonight

I want to let you off tonight
But you want to suffer for your crimes
I want to see past this divide
You and I, we're like oil and wine

I Am
I Am the one
that did the planting of the trees
I Am one, then three, then I Am everything
I Am the one
who thought of all that I can see
I Am all then nothing at all to me

But you are the one to whom I still run

I Am the first word
spoken from the endless deep
I Am the start and the end of mystery
I Am the shield against
my fear and trembling
I Am, not me, but I really want to be

But you are the one to whom I still run

You were the face I knew
Before we all turned to
The written word of proof
We were so proud of you
Was this your intent
Does it represent
The spoken word you sent
or are you unimpressed?

Say Something to Me
Hear my prayer,
Don't turn your face from me
Let me cry at your door
For my days,
they pass away like they are smoke
I struggle to remain untorn

Now say something to me
Turn and hear my cry
Now say something to me
If you'll be inclined

Oh Lord,
Why do you cast my soul away?
Why do you hide from me?
Hear my prayer
and don't let me be afraid
Shall I come begging at your feet?

Now say something to me
Turn and hear my cry
Now say something to me
If you'll be inclined

Is there a song I can sing
to bring me to thee?
Is there a gift I can bring
that will cover the breach?

Now say something to me
Turn and hear my cry
Now say something to me
If you'll be inclined
Now say something to me
Turn and hear my cry
Now say something to me
If you'll be inclined

When You Look Back
Another letter from Augustine
Telling me it's a sin to breath
We are bound from our first cry
Walk on water or die in vain
Caused to stumble by one man's shame
We are bound until we die
We are bound by our need to die

Tell me, when you stare into the rising sun
What do you see when you look back?
Tell me, what will calm the storm
inside you now?
What do you need when you look back?
What will set you free from your demands?

It' is easy to lose your mind
When the theories of space and time
come unbound before your eyes
Saved by love, you kill the flame
To make sense of a senseless grace
you have found, but you deny
You've been found, but forget why

Tell me, when you stare into the rising sun
What do you see when you look back?
Tell me, what will calm the storm
inside you now?
What do you need when you look back?
What will set you free from your demands?

Tell me, when you stare into the rising sun
What do you see when you look back?
Tell me, what will calm the storm
inside you now?
What do you need when you look back?
What will set you free from your demands?

Paradise Lost
In this land of tears and sand
A sickness unto death
has placed its hand on mine
I know you've traveled far and wide
my weary friend
But maybe you could find some time

Come quickly
Show them that you can
Come quickly
Help them understand

The heart slows
and the spirit breaks
From the bounds that hold us
in this place we crawl
I can feel the breath of God upon my face
And it was then I heard your call

Come quickly
Show them that you can
Come quickly
Help them understand

Why was it that you cried?
Did you understand the light
was too much for my eyes
You showed me paradise
and then you pulled me back inside
to this place that mortal pride
slowly dies...it slowly dies

Come quickly
Show them that you can
Come quickly
Help them understand

Torn
I'm torn between your two worlds
of love and the prophets of law
Can time calm an eternal soul
When time means nothing at all
When the hero takes the fall
Spirit of sky hits the ground

Bring me peace cause I don't see,
I cannot breathe
An atmosphere where blood and fear
are the things that we need
I don't know that I want to
know what you know
I've built a wall of heart and stone, no apology

A flood that drowns my remorse
A lamb walks upon that watery grave
It's a long way from Amalek
To the mourning widow of the son from Nain
When the hero takes the fall
Flesh of the Earth shed from bone

Bring me peace cause I don't see,
I cannot breathe
An atmosphere where blood and fear
are the things that we need
I don't know that I want to
know what you know
I've built a wall of heart and stone, no apology

I have looked into the mirror
I have looked at what it cost
And though I'm always asking
I know I am not lost

Bring me peace cause I don't see,
I cannot breathe
An atmosphere where blood and fear
are the things that we need
I don't know that I want to
know what you know
I've built a wall of heart and stone, no apology

Sing While I Run
I have never been the kind
To need to know the design
Though it would be nice to find
The reason why we live and die

I've never been the one
To need to touch the sun
I've always known
there's something more to love
It's why I run, it's why I run

Though the mountains may crumble
I'll sing while I run, sing while I run
And though I may stumble
I'll sing while I run, I'll sing while I run

I suppose it might be true
That I'm a crazy fool
But would I be a greater fool to refuse
A chance to choose, win or lose

Though the mountains may crumble
I'll sing while I run, sing while I run
And though I may stumble
I'll sing while I run, I'll sing while I run
To you

I don't understand those willing to believe
in a god who cannot be received

Though the mountains may crumble
I'll sing while I run, sing while I run
And though I may stumble
I'll sing while I run, I'll sing while I run
To you
