Lyrics

Memphis Hawk is a Detroit-based singer and songwriter who, within his songs, wrestles with the angels of love, faith, death, and identity while being more than happy to include his audience in the conversation. He draws lyrical inspiration from the words of Leonard Cohen, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, and Harold Bloom, and his musical influences range from the atmospheric soundscapes of Daniel Lanois to the dusty ache of Ryan Adams’ reverb-laden guitar. At home on stage as both a solo artist as well as with his occasional band, The Blind Messengers, Memphis Hawk draws inspiration from every aspect of human existence.

Questions
If I could slow down time
If I could make it rhyme
If I could steer this ride
What would I find?

If I could touch the light
If I could tame the vines
If I could make you fine
What would I find?

If I could lead the blind
If I could do it right
If I could loose the binds
What would I find?

If I would be what shines
If I would be, not try
If I could see what’s mine
What would I find?

Silhouette of Reason
Let us etch a silhouette of reason
On a wall built with lead and treason
Love and death, betrothed to the end
Not a question of if, only of when
But I know…but I know…
In the end when the stars fall from the sky
When the scales fall from our eyes
We will see the world as it shines
No need to wait to live until we die
I closed my eyes and I could hear the psalms
And all the clocks sounded
like ticking timebombs
David sang the blues and Job did, too
But could they see the world as we do?
But I know…but I know…
In the end when the stars fall from the sky
When the scales fall from our eyes
We will see the world as it shines
No need to wait to live until we die
The mind is the greatest fear factory
that you'll ever find
We all need a guide to show us the way,
to find the light
In the end when the stars fall from the sky
When the scales fall from our eyes
We will see the world as it shines
No need to wait to live until we die

In the end when the stars fall from the sky
When the scales fall from our eyes
We will see the world as it shines
No need to wait to live until we die

O Death, Can You be a Servant?
O Death, can you be a servant?
To this realm and to the next
Or is your scheme to make us bargain?
To make us fear eternal rest
One day we’ll accept the winter’s frost
And take the hand of thee
It is the fate of the flawed and the flawless
But I’m not rushing to leave
Your roots began inside the Garden
Your shadows reach beyond the grave
And still my soul cannot fathom
A darkness that lasts all the days
One day we’ll accept the winter’s frost
And take the hand of thee
It is the fate of the flawed and the flawless
But I’m not rushing to leave
…though I understand the beauty
And the majesty of a waning moon...
One day we’ll accept the winter’s frost
And take the hand of thee
It is the fate of the flawed and the flawless
But I’m not rushing to leave

Crawl
Wisdom is wasted on ancient tongues
Who speak to the deaf and the dumb
To the proud and the young
I wish I could have known you
when I was a better man
When I didn’t equate love
With dying on a rock
If I crawl…if I crawl
If I fall…if I fall on a sword,
you’d still need more

I never doubted your soothing voice
But I don’t believe my ears
They’re always insincere
So I built you a kingdom;
yeah I built you a throne
So I could feel like a man
Worthy of your hand
If I crawl…if I crawl
If I fall…if I fall on a sword,
you’d still need more
I’m an empty drum, a darkened sun
Always searching for redemption
If I crawl…if I crawl
If I fall…if I fall on a sword,
you’d still need more

Drowning Man
I can’t look ahead, I can’t look behind
This icy water will never be satisfied
I’ve seen a thousand ships
all left behind
Where the unforgiving land meets
the evening tide
Oh, Lord…I’m a drowning man
In the sea of my redemption
Please lift me up,
I don’t want to drown anymore
What’s to fear if we are so certain -
Is this how we repay mercy and love?
The waves are breaking,
they’re breaking us up
Another soul lost in the wake of
Kingdom Come
Oh, Lord…I’m a drowning man
In the sea of my redemption
Please lift me up,
I don’t want to drown anymore
So, if I told you to come inside
Would I hold you or betray you tonight?
We are soothing an ancient pride
While we are shooting our better angels
from the sky
Oh, Lord…I’m a drowning man
In the sea of my redemption
Please lift me up,
I don’t want to drown anymore

Ready to Go
I’m staying out of the spotlight
I’m looking for the door
The air is heavy and I’m ready to go
I’m torn between day and night
I’m losing track of the floor
My head is heavy and I’m ready to go
Let’s go, no need to go slow
I’m ready to go, I'm ready to go
There’s a voice inside my mind
That I can’t ignore
Telling me that it’s my time, get ready to go
Let’s go, this place is not my home
I’m ready to go, I'm ready to go
When the tempest breeze
comes blowing through
And lightning divides the sky
I’m ready to go
I’m ready to go, I'm ready to go
When the tempest breeze
comes blowing through
And lightning divides the sky
I’m ready to go

I Can’t Stay Away from You
Every now and then I try
To find the words to say goodbye
But even when I do it never lasts forever
Because I can’t stay away from you
Must have been a million times
That I thought I’d finally got it right
But the bonds between two hearts
are hard to sever
I can’t stay away from you
You have crossed every ocean
To the pump the water from my lungs
You have tasted every drop of poison
To save even a drop from my tongue
I knew you’d never leave me behind
Because your heart is bigger than my lies
But please don’t ever lay claim
to my failures
I can’t stay away from you
I need to stay away from you
You need me to stay away from you

Under the Moon
You can’t find the road
that will get you back home
Day and night
there is peace in the shadows
You can’t justify the noises in your head
So you drown them
with something else instead
Under the moon…under the sun…
Under the moon…under the sun…
You’ve been able to survive
because there’s no rhyme
Or reason to nightmares
Names and faces
are of no consequences
They were just standing there
Under the moon…under the sun…
Under the moon…under the sun…
You can hide
because you happen to look like me
In plain sight
cause no one suspects deceit
We can analyze every sin that you commit
But the darkest crimes
are the ones you can’t predict
Under the moon…under the sun…
Under the moon…under the sun…

Endless Blue
We’re all blind to the fullness of time
Mortal eyes can’t pierce the tide of evermore
The freedom to choose is a holy noose
The first gift bestowed to those below
If I could I’d sail into the endless blue
Until all I could see was seamless sky
But my mind’s weighed down
By all I hold on to that I can’t let go
There is no soul either wicked or whole
Who can control
what they don’t know they never knew
We allow our wills to compel
The Spirit to move as we want it to
If I could I’d sail into the endless blue
Until all I could see was seamless sky
But my mind’s weighed down
By all I hold on to that I can’t let go
You are the sun and you are the rain
The source of breath and the realm of death
Are your domain
If I could I’d sail into the endless blue
Until all I could see was seamless sky
But my mind’s weighed down
By all I hold on to that I can’t let go

Stay (Last Call)
You slide into the room
with nothing on your tongue
But a phrase you borrowed from the ocean
You seem to know
the right words to sing
Even though you’ve never heard them before
Whether sapphire skies
or dark and stormy nights
Why don’t you stay?
Don’t hang up the phone
Come what may I can be your home

There’s something in your voice
I can’t quite define
Like my soul is anciently obliged
I seek out Solomon,
but I only find the dark
If only my words were as rich as my heart
Your speech gives you away;
my Juliet begins to fade
Why don’t you stay?
Don’t hang up the phone
Come what may I can be your home
Can you still taste it on your lips?
One last bitter kiss
Why don’t you stay?
Don’t hang up the phone
Come what may I can be your home
Why don’t you stay?
Don’t hang up the phone
Come what may you’ll never be alone

Time
Time can build us up,
time can break us down
When we grieve for what we’ve never achieved
Time can tear us apart
There is no one who can turn back the sun
But there’s still light
as long as there’s breath in our lungs
Our crimes will chase us down
despite how far we run
If we don’t believe that we can be redeemed
Time will break our hearts
There is no one who can turn back the sun
But there’s still light
as long as there’s breath in our lungs
Time seems to spur just as we learn why we are here
There is no one who can turn back the sun
But there’s still light
as long as there’s breath in our lungs

Without You
You and I used to share
The same sunlight, the same fragrant air
Now you and I
are on separate sides of despair
You now haunt the same old tombs
Where you fought - you were consumed
Now you’re gone,
you’ve left us all without you
Without you
Now you’re gone, you’re up with the sun
The world has lost some light without you
Without you
We can see the lives you’ve touched
Because you believed it was never enough
Just to speak –
words alone are weak - without you
without you
Now you’re gone, you’re up with the sun
The world has lost some light without you
Without you
Now you’re gone, you’re up with the sun
We will move on, but not without you
Without you
