Lyrics

Memphis Hawk is a Detroit-based singer and songwriter who, within his songs, wrestles with the angels of love, faith, death, and identity while being more than happy to include his audience in the conversation. He draws lyrical inspiration from the words of Leonard Cohen, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, and Harold Bloom, and his musical influences range from the atmospheric soundscapes of Daniel Lanois to the dusty ache of Ryan Adams’ reverb-laden guitar. At home on stage as both a solo artist as well as with his occasional band, The Blind Messengers, Memphis Hawk draws inspiration from every aspect of human existence.

In the Shadows of Prophets and Fools
Horizon

Riding through the night,
thinking the whole time
That looking back
I don't know where I've been
You're always on my mind,
but I lose mine from time to time
The irony is the one you love the most
is the one that has to see all your ghosts

Can we touch the horizon?
Because God knows I've tried
But every breath I take
and every road I've tried...
brings me back to your side

There's always consequence
and always a chance for regret
Love's the broken offering we bring
Its vanity to try
to perfect our whole lives
Every man is ruined now and then
to remind him that he is just a man

Can we touch the horizon?
Because God knows I've tried
But every breath I take
and every road I've tried...
brings me back to your side

Sometimes space can be our mortal enemy
And sometimes walls can teach us
what freedom means

Can we touch the horizon?
Because God knows I've tried
But every breath I take
and every road I've tried...
brings me back to your side

Break of Day
I can feel it coming over me;
there's a shadow falling at my feet
Angel or devil, what do I see?
It doesn't really matter much to me
Have you come to take my life?
Or is there another reason why?
This doesn't feel like our first fight;
I'm just trying to survive...
until the break of day
I was born into this world of greed
barely hanging on to the one I seek
I've been looking for an enemy,
someone who will define me
Have you come to take my life?
Or is there another reason why?
This doesn't feel like our first fight;
I'm just trying to survive...
until the break of day

LaMancha

Turn on the light,
this can't wait til sunrise
If I don't go I'll regret it my whole life
I might be cruel; I might be a conman or a fool
But just so you know,
I know what this must do to you
Cause I know that the loneliest soul in the world
Is the one who loves the lost

Call to me; you can see the places I can't find
Call to me; you can see the faces I've denied
It's just like me...fighting monsters in my mind
Call to me and save me from the windmills
I've designed

It's madness to die
without leaving blood on the line
Oh, to be slain! Fighting demons that I find
It's older than light: truth is the rival of time
Tethered by fate;
it's either our warden or our guide
But I know that the loneliest soul in the world
Is the one who knows there's more

Call to me; you can see the places I can't find
Call to me; you can see the faces I've denied
It's just like me...fighting monsters in my mind
Call to me and save me from the windmills
I've designed

Why can't I be?
What's the source of my decree?
Is it divine or is it the devil inside of me?

Call to me; you can see the places I can't find
Call to me; you can see the faces I've denied
It's just like me...fighting monsters in my mind
Call to me and save me from the windmills
I've designed

Forever and a Day
For Leonard and Marianne

I don't want to watch you as you go
Does that weakness make it seem less real?
I was always a gypsy falling free
Never as good
as I should have been

But I will love you forever and a day
I will love you forever and a day

Near the line on the horizon we sailed
It was there I disappeared in you
I found wisdom and salvation at your feet
Yeah, you taught this blind prophet
he could see

And I will love you forever and a day
I will love you forever and a day
Though our bodies will fail come what may
I will love you forever and a day

On an island of hope
we sat beside the rising tide
Won't you reach out; I'm close behind

I will love you forever and a day
I will love you forever and a day
Though our bodies will fail come what may
I will love you forever and a day

Into the Sun

Driving under the evening sun
thinking I was the prodigal one
I'm staying ahead,
but the demons aren't far behind
Memories like desert sand
blowing across this open land
Jesus please tell me where it all went wrong

I'll just drive into the sun

Daylight turns to evening shade
I'm listening to Etta James
At last, she said;
well I used to feel that way
The road ahead calls my name
but still I peek at the turning lane
Yesterday is gone, but the past remains

I'll just drive into the sun

Falling from the Sky

Another hazy morning like all the rest,
only lately its been harder to tell
the cursed from the blessed
Down a spiral staircase
into a whale;
what you have asked of me
goes beyond the pale

I saw the stars fall from the sky
like a fire from Heaven
burning a hole in the night
The moon turned red in your eyes
as I saw your world begin to die

You can't put the bullet back in the gun;
the empty chamber
cools the warmth of the sun
You asked me to surrender
to a bleeding crown
but history will judge me
long after I'm in the ground

I saw the stars fall from the sky
like a fire from Heaven
burning a hole in the night
The moon turned red in your eyes
as I saw your world begin to die
You said this dust
would regret ever breathing life
And you said someone
would have to pay the price
Is there anyone else
who can bear this weight?
The cup you gave is far too great

I saw the stars fall from the sky
like a fire from Heaven
burning a hole in the night
The moon turned red in your eyes
as I saw your world begin to die

Desert Rose

Driving down the 409,
you're whispering to my mind
But I can't understand your musings
I asked you if you wanted to dance,
you said I didn't have a chance
Desire is nothing but confusion

This could have been a new beginning
You could have been my desert rose
If there is one thing that I know at all
It's that I don't know anything at all

Many men have come before;
they've scratched and clawed at your door
We've crawled a million miles to know you
We're all just paper airplanes
flying to close to your flame
With hearts shaped like wings of hubris

This could have been a new beginning
You could have been my desert rose
If there is one thing that I know at all
It's that I don't know anything at all

I am still miles away
from anything that I can claim
I tend to the yields in the fields of kings
Only the chord that ties belongs to me

Like a dozen sad disciples
I wait at your alter and at your grave
I'm a grain of sand waiting for your tide

This could have been a new beginning
You could have been my desert rose
If there is one thing that I know at all
It's that I don't know anything at all

Release Me

Gravity can't hold me down
Though I long for its binds
and the benefits of doubt
Who knew that a spirit could bleed
Waiting for Elijah to come;
for Abraham to speak?

Maybe if I hurry,
if I query there's a chance for me
Tell me rather firmly not to worry,
and I'll believe

Where is my eternal home?
When there's no more message to bring,
where does the messenger go?
Who knew that a spirit could bleed
From David's broken bed
to a cursed tree

Maybe if I hurry,
if I query there's a chance for me
Tell me rather firmly not to worry,
and I'll believe

Eternity makes the coldest sound;
a prison no better than the ground
You tied me down
with the weight of age...
release me from this skin of flames
Release me

Maybe if I hurry,
if I query there's a chance for me
Tell me rather firmly not to worry,
And I'll believe
Maybe if I hurry,
if I query there's a chance for me
Tell me rather firmly not to worry,
and I'll believe...
that I'll be released

Winter

I've seen the seasons change so fast
Autumn's leaves only dance for so long
We may never know
when to expect the snow
But winter will come...at last

I hope you'd be left with enough
to get you through the long winter months
When you can't find heat in the sun
It would be worse than death
to know that you were left out in the cold
You deserve a spirit to hold...onto

I stare through frozen panes outside
At trees no better than you or I at holding on
The daylight's not so long;
the evening comes on strong
But every dawning needs the night

I hope you'd be left with enough
to get you through the long winter months
When you can't find heat in the sun
It would be worse than death
to know that you were left out in the cold
You deserve a spirit to hold...onto
The world's your stage to dance
To live is to take a chance
Your mouth may speak in tongues
But your heart is clearly sung

I hope you'd be left with enough
to get you through the long winter months
When you can't find heat in the sun
It would be worse than death
to know that you were left out in the cold
You deserve a spirit to hold...onto
You've come and gone so far
with a light from here to the stars
May your hope never know the dark
Don't stop seeing the world
with eyes that have never been burned
If only you didn't have to learn...winter

Silence

There was no response to the utterance
No argument for the innocent
As you once did for the wicked
At dawn we arose
You were silent, I was alone
There was a mystery as to who would relent

It was your snare of silence, your solemn oath
Your chains of fate, your Holy Ghost
Your silent treaty in blood on stone
Your sacrifice at the end of my road

Was I the threshold you had to cross
To regain the faith that you had lost?
The Devil's trap isn't free
There is no angel in Heaven who can
Stop a knife that's already fallen
Innocence trampled under the foot
of fear and trembling

It was your snare of silence, your solemn oath
Your chains of fate, your Holy Ghost
Your silent treaty in blood on stone
Your sacrifice at the end of my road
