Lyrics

Memphis Hawk is a Detroit-based singer and songwriter who, within his songs, wrestles with the angels of love, faith, death, and identity while being more than happy to include his audience in the conversation. He draws lyrical inspiration from the words of Leonard Cohen, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, and Harold Bloom, and his musical influences range from the atmospheric soundscapes of Daniel Lanois to the dusty ache of Ryan Adams’ reverb-laden guitar. At home on stage as both a solo artist as well as with his occasional band, The Blind Messengers, Memphis Hawk draws inspiration from every aspect of human existence.

The Space Between Two Thoughts
Unconquered Soul

It's in your heart
It's in your soul
I don't know how you could hold on
You were the one
who never gave up on love
Long after the rest of us
would have said enough

It's in your heart
It's in your unconquered soul
It's in your heart
Written long ago
From the start
From before you were born
It's in your heart

A cold wind
tried to break your will
Our apathy was colder still
Freedom is just dream
that fades away at first light
When those with eyes
choose to be blind

It's in your heart
It's in your unconquered soul
It's in your heart
Written long ago
From the start
From before you were born
It's in your heart

The burden of hate
Is more than any soul can bear
So let one man's dream
Be a nation's prayer

It's in your heart
It's in your unconquered soul
It's in your heart
Written long ago
From the start
From before you were born
It's in your heart

Thief

The nights were long
The days were dark
You only came when the cold set in
The midnight sky
and the silent stars
Were the only witness

You sing the hymns of olden times
I'll meet you in the morning light
Skin and bones and blood on stones
Was the only life you knew
Until you became the thief of love

You were a stranger
In a strange land
Always hunted by the worst of man
So many delivered
By your hand
Either liberty or death

You sing the hymns of olden times
I'll meet you in the morning light
Skin and bones and blood on stones
Was the only life you knew
Until you became the thief of love

I'll never know or truly understand
You're not mine to claim
The scars you own
Are reflected in this broken land
You showed us the way

You sing the hymns of olden times
I'll meet you in the morning light
Skin and bones and blood on stones
Was the only life you knew
Until you became the thief of love

Darker
I'm told it can't get any darker
I'm told we are on the brink
I'm told it's gotten so much darker
So much darker than I think
But I'm told that we are great
Greater than the last
Greater than the greatest kingdoms
That have come to pass

If you can call the angels
Now would be the time
If you can call the angels
for some piece of mind
If we could all act as angels
We wouldn't need the signs
If we could all act as angels
We'd be just fine

I'm told that we are lost
That we have lost our way
I'm told that we have fallen from
The path that was made
The brilliant men
they gained for us a freedom
They were smarter than the rest
Though freedom looks a lot
Like somebody else

If you can call the angels
Now would be the time
If you can call the angels
for some piece of mind
If we could all act as angels
We wouldn't need the signs
If we could all act as angels
We'd be just fine

If you can call the angels
Now would be the time
If you can call the angels
for some piece of mind
If we could all act as angels
We wouldn't need the signs
If we could all act as angels
We'd be just fine

Love Will Carry Us
Your sad eyes filled up the sky
Like rainclouds above me
Do you want the truth or a lie?
Whatever makes you happy
We've got blood on both our hands
We don't know how to wash them
I think that I have lost the path
Maybe we both have

Love will carry us

Our bodies are broken, our hearts are bruised
Maybe tomorrow will be better
You aren't the only one to lose
We're in this together
We are more than what divides
More than what our eyes see
Maybe you forgot how much we're alike
Maybe we both have

Love will carry us

We were given a solemn rose
We gave back a crown of thorns
We despise what we don't have
We built a temple on a hill
Now we fight over stained-glass stills
When we can no longer walk
Or barely crawl...

Love will carry us

The Colors of Your Eyes
I'm wide awake, you're sleeping
What's the big idea?
4 am is just a state of mind, my dear
The world outside is waiting
To see the colors of your eyes

The petrichor is rising
In the morning air
Drops of sky returning to the places where
Life and death return to
all the colors of your eyes

All the colors of your eyes
I can see all the paths that lie ahead
Underneath the moon beyond
your window ledge
Waiting for you to open your eyes

I'm wide awake, you're dreaming
Of a different place and time
But they don't have to live in
The chambers of your mind
They're better when you see them
With all the colors of your eyes

All the colors of your eyes
I can see all the paths that lie ahead
Underneath the moon beyond
your window ledge
Waiting for you to open your eyes

In all the colors of your eyes
I can see all the truth behind the lies
Calling me to understand this life
Still they shine,
all those colors in your eyes

And though I can be restless
With some big idea
Don't need to rush the morning
You can rest my dear
I would wait a lifetime
To see the colors in your eyes

A Howl from a Whisper
The books are filled with gods and kings
Who built cathedrals of concrete
They chased away the native sons
And still their ghosts are on the run

But still I wait to say a word
Still my voice remains unheard

There's a city on a hill
It's gone dark; it's gone still
Maybe it was too much to ask
Afterall it's only rocks and sand

But still I wait to say a word
Still my voice remains unheard
There is still so much that I haven't learned
to raise a howl from a whisper

Still I wait to say a word
Still my voice remains unheard
There is still so much that I haven't learned
to raise a howl from a whisper

Dear Sabrina
To my dearest sweet Sabrina
I hope this letter finds you well
It's been two years since I saw you
This separation has been hell
The borders of our hearts are drawn in sand
They're blown and ravaged by time
But no pendulum will keep me from
returning your hand to mine

Even now, even when
I look around at this emptiness
Some bonds can't be severed
No pain lasts forever, even now

Can you still see my face?
Can your youthful heart understand?
I still have faith that you're reading these
Cause faith is all that I have

Even now, even when
I look around at this emptiness
Some bonds can't be severed
No pain lasts forever, even now

I was beaten and left for dead
You are my blood, I have paid my debt
I see no oil I see no wine
But your heart still lives in mine

Even now, even when
I look around at this emptiness
Some bonds can't be severed
No pain lasts forever, even now

The Kings of Empty Swagger
The peasant works and supplants
the man with soft and idle hands
Beneath the red light of Arcturus
A servant's life is no life at all

We believe we've found the answer
and it will be forever after
That the past doesn't matter
We're immune to the clatter
We're the kings of empty swagger

It was only a matter of time
Before the tool learned how to defy
Beneath the red light of Arcturus
History is here again

We believe we've found the answer
and it will be forever after
That the past doesn't matter
We're immune to the clatter
We're the kings of empty swagger

We believe we've found the answer
and it will be forever after
That the past doesn't matter
We're immune to the clatter
We're the kings of empty swagger

Counting the Stars
90 miles away, you are all alone
Staring out your window
Into the dead of night
Will we have tomorrow?
Will I see you again?
It's time to move across the fields
Now that the night's began

Now I'm counting the stars
To see which ones fall
And it breaks my heart to know
That you know

90 miles away, now I'm on my knees
Praying to a god
That I have never seen
So many lives
died on the vine
They were born in a crashing car
And they don't know why

Now I'm counting the stars
To see which ones fall
And it breaks my heart to know
That you know

When you're born in blood
Its blood that you seek
There's a penance we have to pay
to justify belief, to justify belief in now

Now I'm counting the stars
To see which ones fall
And it breaks my heart to know
That you know

Lamb Amongst the Wolves
The heartbreak in their mourning
Is heartbreak in your eyes
Heartbreak is the muse you kiss goodnight
You're bleeding on the pages
Making the pain rhyme
Martyrdom and a pen by candlelight

You can't help but to feel like
a lamb amongst the wolves
Nowhere to hide even when you should
There has got to be a better way
After all of these years
There ain't no ink
thicker than these tears

The deadline's been made
But who will take the time?
It's just another day in paradise
You're searching for the truth
But word to the wise
The story has been standardized

You can't help but to feel like
a lamb amongst the wolves
Nowhere to hide even when you should
There has got to be a better way
After all of these years
There ain't no ink
thicker than these tears

You're chasing the bullet
back to where it begun
Trying your hardest not to run
Losing your head
is not the same thing as losing your mind
What you saw, you cannot leave it behind

You can't help but to feel like
a lamb amongst the wolves
Nowhere to hide even when you should
There has got to be a better way
After all of these years
There ain't no ink
thicker than these tears

What's in a Heart?
What's in a heart
that calls out to another?
What's in a soul
that brings out the colors
in the eyes of a perfect stranger?
What's the source
of the spell that we're under?

What's in a heart? What's in a soul?
That tears us apart
What makes us all whole
What's in a heart?

What keeps the peace
when war is our cover?
How do we know
when we stumble
through the doors
of a darkened chamber
where we stand
as jealous lovers?

What's in a heart? What's in a soul?
That tears us apart
What makes us all whole
What if we refuse?
What if we're consumed?
What is it that holds back the tide?
What if we believe our own conceits
What is it that keeps us alive?
How do we survive?

In a world where fear is currency
The bravest ones are those that believe

What's in a heart? What's in a soul?
That tears us apart
What makes us all whole
What if we refuse?
What if we're consumed?
What is it that holds back the tide?
What if we believe our own conceits
What is it that keeps us alive?
How do we survive?
What if we lose? What if we refuse?
What if we can't see the other side?
What if we leave?
Will we receive that which keeps us alive?
How do we survive?

What's in a heart...
