Lyrics

Memphis Hawk is a Detroit-based singer and songwriter who, within his songs, wrestles with the angels of love, faith, death, and identity while being more than happy to include his audience in the conversation. He draws lyrical inspiration from the words of Leonard Cohen, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Dickinson, and Harold Bloom, and his musical influences range from the atmospheric soundscapes of Daniel Lanois to the dusty ache of Ryan Adams’ reverb-laden guitar. At home on stage as both a solo artist as well as with his occasional band, The Blind Messengers, Memphis Hawk draws inspiration from every aspect of human existence.

Hiding in Parables
Every Day

I’m not afraid of getting older
I’m not afraid of getting old
There is no shame in one’s mortality,
it’s a noble thing
To have a life to look back on
I want to look back with you
Through broken strings and mended wings
There’s a song to sing and wedding rings
Since I first saw you
Since I first touched the hand of thee
I have loved you every day
I’m not afraid we will smolder
I’m not afraid that we’ll grow cold
Even after we’ve spent all of these years,
and all of these tears
You’re still the one I rely on
I’m still mad about you
Through broken strings and mended wings
There’s a song to sing in wedding rings
Since I first saw you
Since I first touched the hand of thee
I have loved you every day
A passionate love is a suffering one
And I will suffer for you until the end of time
Since I first saw you
Since I first touched the hand of thee
I have loved you every day
Through broken strings and mended wings
There’s a song to sing and wedding rings
Every day

Late Night Caller

Love, such a fragile word this love
All it takes for it to come unbound
Is just a little bit of doubt
The heart, people say that it’s the heart
Where all of the questions start to appear?
But it really is the ears
Say that you love me now
Say that you want me now
Say that you need me now
Hope, such a foolish word this hope
It keeps us standing by the phone each night
And keeps telling us it’s lies
The truth, not sure I’m ready for the truth
Can we just pretend that you and
Have a little bit more time?
Say that you love me now
Say that you want me now
Say that you need me now
You were the warmth in my night
You were the source of my pride
I crawled since that’s what I thought
was the meaning of love
Even though that meant that
you couldn’t stand up
Say that you love me now
Say that you want me now
Say that you need me now

Without Words
You, darling look at you
Being torn in two
in the twilight of your youth
I didn’t read the signs
I’d like to say that I was blind
But that’s a lie
If you find it in your heart to say goodbye
I will trust in you and cease from asking why
I will be a better man
And I will understand you without words
Love is something that you do
But not something that you prove,
it is a consequence of truth
Time, there’s not enough in this life
To outrun all of our crimes, though I try
If you find it in your heart to say goodbye
I will trust in you and cease from asking why
I will be a better man
And I will understand you without words
Because thoughtless words
they cut just like a sword
Both the cursed,
and those that are adored
I hope to someday be wise enough to heal
What has been torn
If you find it in your heart to say goodbye
I will trust in you and cease from asking why
I will be a better man
And I will understand you without words
If you find it in your heart to say goodbye
I will trust in you and cease from asking why
I will be a better man
And I will understand you without words

By the Sea
Sometimes it can seem
Like there is too much to prove
You just need to breathe
So let’s go find the sea
We’ll drive until the day is through
Just you and me
By the sea, by the sea
We can sort our grief
Talk until the sun breaks through
Say the things that we need
Please don’t lie to me
But maybe not tell the whole truth
Be kind to me
By the sea, by the sea
It has been so long since we went away
It feels like it’s been a year of somedays
I long to be back where we hear the waves
And watch the storms across the bay
Finally, we will sleep
And dream of all that we will do
By the sea
By the sea, by the sea

The Moon and Stars
If I could hold the sun
Would it light your way home?
If I could hold the rain
til the storms are done
Would you find your way back home?
I could hold the moon
and every star in my hand
I could move the mountains
and count every grain of sand
I could touch the light
and feel every thought you have
But no matter what
I cannot change your path
If I could hold a flame
Would it light your way back home
If I could stop the waves
would that be enough
To find your way back home?
I could hold the moon
and every star in my hand
I could move the mountains
and count every grain of sand
I could touch the light
and feel every thought you have
But no matter what
I cannot change your path
If I could change the way you feel
If I could remove your free will
What we had would never be anything real
I’d rather have nothing
than something I steal
I could hold the moon
and every star in my hand
I could move the mountains
and count every grain of sand
I could touch the light
and feel every thought you have
But no matter what
I cannot change your path

Broken Wings
I am the wind
that blows the ship out to the sea
You are the anchor in the storms
and the breath between the beat
How is it one can compel
A lowly spirit to lift his eyes and see
How is it that one who fell
Can learn to fly with a broken pair of wings
With broken wings
You are a rose
always both the petals and the thorns
I am the hand that gladly bleeds
to remind you that you are adored
How is it one can compel
A lowly spirit to lift his eyes and see
How is it that one who fell
Can learn to fly with a broken pair of wings
With broken wings
How is it one can compel
A lowly spirit to lift his eyes and see
How is it that one who fell
Can learn to fly with a broken pair of wings
The weight of the world overwhelms
A lowly spirit to fall beneath the sea
Yet you can teach the one who fell
To learn to fly with a broken pair of wings
With broken wings

Disappear into One
You are the one
with whom I’ll watch the sun
Fall beneath the surface
of icy blue Lake Michigan
You are the one
with whom I’ll drink to love
Blood, red wine, ashes, and dust
as embers give their last heat up
It’s still remains a wonder
how any soul survives the flood
It still remains I wonder
how two souls disappear into one
You are the one
with whom I have become
And tangled by mysterious spirits
of ancient wisdom
You are the one
with whom I hear the drum
Ever elusive rhythm
guiding us to the kingdom

The Man of Your Dreams
It wasn’t me,
it was the man of your dreams
Who broke your heart
and watched it bleed
He crashed your car
into the deep blue sea
So don’t, don’t blame me,
t was the man of your dreams
Can’t you see?
it was the man of your dreams
Who kissed the girl
and made you scream
He made you hurt
and denied all of your needs
So don’t, don’t blame me,
it was the man of your dreams
I’m forced to question why
our subconscious mind’s at unease
Is there truth in its lies?
Please don’t blame me,
it was the man of your dreams
We can’t control the fears that breed
In the night as you lay on a bed of reeds
With me, the man of your dreams
I’m forced to question why
your subconscious mind’s at unease
Is there truth behind its lies?
Please release me, the man of your dreams
Please forgive me

When it Leaves
I’d like to read your mind
But I’m afraid of what I just might find
It’s the truth that tears the soul
You crashed into my life
Dressed in a beautiful disguise
Now I am left with a you-shaped hole
Where does love go when it leaves?
Does it die or just concede?
Was it you who let it bleed?
Where was I who would not see?
I’d like to see inside
The words you said to all the reasons why
Do you know what it is I should’ve known
When the dust subsides
Do we get to keep the things that we find?
To build a house we can call a home
Where does love go when it leaves?
Does it die or just concede?
Was it you who let it bleed?
Or was it I who would not see?
Have mercy on a man
who doubts the cards in his hand
and the ground on which he stands
Where does love go when it leaves?
Does it die or just concede?
Was it you who let it bleed?
Or was it I who would not see?
Where does love go when it leaves?
Did you try to intercede?
Is there somewhere in between?
Can I go there to find peace?

Darkest Well
Why do I hurt you?
I get no joy from your pain
Do I think I deserve you?
Well, that just might explain
Why I feel the need
to hold onto this flame
Even though the years have told me to refrain
Will we see the morning blue skies
Through the storm clouds
of my foolish pride?
Why do I curse you?
The words are poison in my veins
They leave me black and blue
But you are left with the blame
For all I’ve said
in the face of self-disdain
And all I’ve done
in the name of the profane
Will we see the morning blue skies
Through the storm clouds of my foolish pride?
The deeper I dwell, the more I pull you down
Into the darkest well; together we drown
Will we see In the Morning blue skies
Through the storm clouds of my foolish pride?

Ship of Theseus
There is a ship upon the sea
It is the pieces of you and of me
We’re not the same as we used to be
The scars now form our seams
I would trade away
the smoke and mirrors
For something real
something more than we feel
There’s a romance that comes with the years
That denies fear,
one where two hearts can heal
Without the ghosts that haunt our dreams
We would not survive the tempest breeze
I would trade away
the smoke and mirrors
For something real
something more than we feel
There’s a romance that comes with the years
That denies fear,
one where two hearts can heal
As the rain comes around
As the waves push us down
As we search for common ground
In the space between the sound
I would trade away
the smoke and mirrors
For something real
something more than we feel
There’s a romance that comes with the years
That denies fear,
one where two hearts can heal
